Visitor Visa Subclass 600: Choosing the Right Stream
Tourist, Business Visitor, or Sponsored Family — how the streams differ, and why applying under the wrong one causes problems.

The subclass is one visa, several streams
Subclass 600 covers several different streams — most commonly Tourist, Business Visitor, and Sponsored Family — each assessed against different criteria. Applying under the wrong stream for the actual purpose of travel is a common, avoidable source of delay or refusal.
Tourist stream
For holiday travel, visiting family or friends informally, or general leisure travel. This stream expects a clear travel itinerary and evidence of funds and ties to the applicant's home country.
Business Visitor stream
For short-term business activities — attending meetings, conferences, or negotiations — not for undertaking paid work in Australia. Supporting documentation from the Australian business being visited strengthens this stream considerably.
Sponsored Family stream
For visiting an eligible family member who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, where that family member is willing to act as a sponsor. This stream depends heavily on the sponsor's own documentation and approval.
Why the right stream matters
The Department of Home Affairs assesses the application against the stream selected — a tourism-style application that actually describes an extended, open-ended stay, for example, is a mismatch that tends to generate additional questions rather than a straightforward approval.
