The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): What It Actually Requires
How Thailand's dedicated remote-work visa works, and the income and documentation it expects.

A genuine visa category, not a workaround
The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is Thailand's dedicated visa for remote workers and freelancers whose income comes from outside the country — a real, purpose-built visa category, rather than informal tolerance of remote work under a tourist visa.
The core requirement: income from outside Thailand
Applicants need to show their income is generated from an employer or clients based outside Thailand. Salaried remote employees and freelancers with verifiable client relationships can both qualify, though the supporting documentation differs between the two.
What applicants generally need to show
- Financial evidence meeting the DTV threshold, held for a period before applying
- Proof your income source is based outside Thailand
- Documents specific to your applicant category — for example, contracts or client agreements
What the DTV doesn't allow
The DTV does not authorize working for a Thai employer or otherwise entering the local labour market. It's specifically for people whose work continues to be for organizations or clients based outside Thailand.
Requirements are being applied more strictly over time
Scrutiny of DTV applications has increased since launch, particularly around the source and seasoning of funds and the clarity of freelance documentation. Confirm current financial thresholds and required documents directly with the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a Thai embassy/consulate before applying.
